I've been told that Antivirus E-mail Scanning Programs can cause problems in sending and receiving e-mail in my Outlook. Is this true?

Some users have difficulties receiving or sending e-mail with certain features in various anti-virus programs installed and running on their PC.  If you have an anti-virus program installed and running, you may experience the following symptoms when trying to download your messages via Outlook:

  1. You never receive e-mail even though mail is waiting in queue or residing in your webmail.
  2. Mail you send out never arrives even though it appears in your sent items.
  3. You get false promptings for errors about the mail server in your e-mail program.
  4. Duplicate messages appear in your Inbox.

What to do:

  1. Close your Outlook program
  2. Start the Antivirus control panel (usually by locating the icon in the system tray near the clock)
  3. Click Options
  4. Click E-mail Protection
  5. Un-check all the boxes in the E-mail Clients box or Scanning Options
  6. Press OK to exit the Options and Control Panel.
  7. Open Outlook.
