Users trying to send attachments while composing the message in RTF (Rich Text Format) mode are unable to successfully send attachments to recipients on a consistent basis.
The Cause
The user has sent the mail in RTF mode. This setting is a Microsoft® Outlook® setting designed to work with other copies of Outlook, and MS Exchange servers. Most e-mail clients/providers deal with this type of attachment unpredictably, including the LoadMail web-based e-mail system.
Identifying the Problem
One of the easiest ways to identify whether Outlook is sending mail in RTF mode is by the way the attachment appears in the message once it has been uploaded/attached. If the attachment appears as an Icon in the message body and NOT as a unique field on the Outlook application, the message is being composed in RTF mode.
The Solution
- If messages are composed in the two (2) standard acceptable formats (HTML and Text Only), message attachments should arrive to the recipient as intended.
- If both users have POP3 access and are using Outlook (not Outlook Express), messages sent in RTF mode should be sent and received successfully.
